Ashmolean wins the Arts Fund Prize 2010

Ulster Museum came a close second (I'd have been happy to see it win). Even happier that the count has now been checked and verified and the wonderful Ashmolean has actually won.

The Ashmolean Transformed

The new Ashmolean Museum in Oxford was opened to the public last weekend 7/8th November.

Today, I had some spare time and as it was wet and windy it was a perfect day to visit. The ground floor is given over to the Ancient World. Unfortunately the European Prehistory room is not ready yet (I was told to give it another month)... continues...

Hillforts of the Ridgeway Project

The Hillforts of the Ridgeway Project is a long-term research project centred on the Ridgeway and the northern Berkshire Downs. The focus is on continuity and change during the later Prehistoric and Romano-British Periods. Work so far has centred on White Horse Hill, Segsbury Camp and Alfred's Castle. The project is run as a training excavation for full-time students on the Oxford BA Archaeology and Anthropology course, and part-time students on Oxford Continuing Education Certificate and Diploma courses. Work continues at Alfred's Castle in July 2000.

Uffington White Horse (Hill Figure) — News

Bookies causes a flutter with White Horse jockey stunt

Putting this up as news though the stunt has now vanished.....

A 3,000-YEAR-OLD hill carving of a horse now has a JOCKEY thanks to bookies Paddy Power.

Locals woke up to find the rider had been secretly added overnight to the Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire to promote next week's Cheltenham Festival.

The 110ft tall and 200ft wide temporary installation was pinned to the ground with tent pegs five feet from the original chalk marking to avoid causing damage.

The stunt is part of Paddy Power's We Hear You campaign.

And the firm now hopes the Uffington Rider will become a site of pilgrimage for racing fans from all over the UK in the run-up to the festival.

A spokesman said: "Funnily enough, the idea for our Uffington Rider came from a tweet from one of our customers.

"He was responding to our We Hear You campaign asking if we had any mischief planned for Cheltenham in the wake of our giant Hollywood sign a few years ago.

"We simply couldn't resist the challenge and needed to come up with something spectacular to measure up to the giant sign. I think we've achieved this."

Paddy Power has made a donation to the National Trust, which maintains the Uffington White Horse.

Note; a spokesman for the National Trust says....

"This has been done without the knowledge of the National Trust and, as far as we can tell, without any Scheduled Monument Consent."

Thor Stone (Standing Stone / Menhir) — Fieldnotes

Visited 1st May 2011

A lovely sunny spring day on our way down to Portsmouth and the ferry to Brittany. I'd looked for the Thor stone before on previous trips down to the Rollrights, but was always confused by the maze of lanes.

Now with the sat-nav taking the strain we pull up in the tiny village of Tatston. Managing to park near the old stone cross on the green without blocking the roads, (a feat in itself) we have a wander over to examine the stone.

The stone is a good size, and reminds me of the oolithic limestone that makes up the Rollrights, but less holey. It seems indignant to the proximity of the nearby wall, like it's trying to peer over into the garden. The village is quiet today, it seems to have a bit of a 'Midsommer Murders' vibe to it, and no cars come by to interrupt my photographing of the menhir. It's nice to see that the Thor Stone seems to have weathered the centuries better than the stone cross set up to ward off its evil influence!

Giving the stone a Beltane hug we leave to continue our journey, if you're in the area the Thor stone, Hawk stone and Hoar stone can all be easily visited being quite close to each other, and I'm glad we finally managed to explore this corner of megalithic Oxfordshire.
