Loch Shurrery lies beyond.
Entrance stone.....
Northern flank, looking west(ish). Note the standing stone defining what I presume to be the original entrance.
The best of the artificial defences cover the northern arc. Near sheer flanks protect the other points of the compass.
Looking west to Loch Shurrery and the ‘Flow Country’.... for me perhaps the essence of Caithness.... the landscape a little unnerving when the rain sweeps in to mute colour tone.
Approaching from Ben Dorrery.... always good to see a hillfort still cradling an even more ancient cairn, particularly of the chambered variety.
Seen from the north east. The fort occupies the top of the hill.
Seen from neighbouring Ben Dorrery. You can make out the chambered cairn at the top.
A short walk from the mast atop Ben Dorrery, although it’s across heather – so avoid during tic season. This fort, also known as Buaile Oscar, covers a fairly large area and makes good use of natural rock defenses.
