About four kilometres south of Isleornsay along the A851, Dùn Knock proved harder to visit than anticipated. Setting off from a car parking area beside Loch nann Dubhrachan, the OS map suggested an easy walk of about 500 metres to the east. But it was not to be.

Dùn Knock sits amid a cluster of low hills and is not visible from the road. Getting there was somewhat like tackling a maze.

There is a river to cross, and little in the way of paths towards the dùn. Nevertheless, I eventually arrived there to find the dùn, almost completely encircled by the tumbled remains of a defensive wall. There’s lots of fallen masonry here, much of it concealed by thick heather, and I tumbled head-over-heels numerous times making the apparently easy descent from the dùn.

In retrospect, it might have been wiser to tackle the dùn from the coast at Teange, a kilometre farther south.
