According to Ian Cooke's book "The Tinner's Way", this cross design originated in Crete in 2000-1500BC. It represents part of an axe-cult concerned with royalty and a goddess priesthood.
What it is doing in West Cornwall is not known...or is it?

The graveyard of the church is in a round suggesting a pre christian site.
