Maybe it's because it's so unashamedly reconstructed, but even in the depths of a dark foggy night, it's quite a welcoming place.

I am grateful to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (www.socantscot.org) for permission to reproduce this photograph of the carved slab at Nether Largie North, taken during excavation in 1930.

Taken 14th August 2004: I think the cairn in the foreground is Nether Largie North, and the cairn in the background is Glebe Cairn (thanks to Hob for helping me identify the cairns).

I've unwittingly managed to include Càrn Bàn cairn in this photo as well. It's visible on the horizon above Nether Largie North, left of centre in the frame (thanks to Greywether for pointing that out).

Nether Largie North

Just south of The Glebe, follow the track to the next cairn, Largie North, classified as Bronze Age. It has been rebuilt and capped with a concrete slab plus hatch. Access into the cairn is via this hatch, therefore all three of us (B is a dog) made it inside.

Inside is a treat, the cist is revealed with its fantastically decorated capstone. The cairn stands at 20m by 2.7m and is a brilliant example of restoration.

The whole site is situated inside a fence.

A wonderful opportunity for members of the public to see what is inside these stony mounds.

Nether Largie North

Visited 24.7.15

For some reason I didn't get to see this fantastic site on my last visit to Kilmartin. Something I intended to put right on this visits.

And it certainly was worth the wait. Wow. What a great place – one of the best of the many excellent sites in Kilmartin Glen.

I heaved the metal hatch open and climbed down into the chamber. The cup marked cist cover is a sight to behold and the intact cist is a joy. This is a place to sit and ponder.

Which I did until my 'phone went with Karen insisting I get to the B+B immediately as the children were playing up (a common theme on this holiday) and she was pulling her hair out.

Time to go – prompt!

This is one of the many 'must see' KIlmartin sites.
