Funny, I never even thought that perhaps the stones were *supposed* to be lying down. . It just seemed to me that they should be standing up.
It's quite horrible to imagine people breaking them down. What on Earth were they scared of?

Now I wish even more that they would be repaired and re-erected. I wonder what would be needed? And how much it would cost?
What a truly magnificent site it would be – a little Avebury at the top of the world! (Well, that’s how it feels when you’re up there).

I know it sounds daft but we carry a very good set of stones around with us. Some of the smaller ones are arranged into a 'cove' pattern (in our mouths).

What were they so frightened of to destroy them so badly? - ask George W - it seems as though he fears the same thing. Those early archaeologists were tomb raiders, more like.

Broken off stones can be repaired just like teeth, with hard, hidden, cement and metal pins. It's better than just leaving them lying on the ground. Then brush them with half milk half water to develop a brisk patina.

Well I cant say for sure for this circle but a hell of a lot of em were destroyed deliberately by relgious zealots in an attemtp to remove all traces of the old pagan traditions.
As we know fertility rites were often associated with circles and megaliths. And as we also know anything to do with sex is frowned on by the Christian church. So the obvious solution - get rid of the circle and you get rid of the pagan tradition.
