The majority of the stones at Arbor Low have been broken at ground level. Next to most of the toppled stones you can see a stump left in the ground. If you examine the stones carefully, you can see where they fit onto their relevant stumps.

How do I know this?

I`ve been fortunate enough to spend a morning at Arbor Low with John Barnatt, Senior Survey Archaeologist for the Peak District National Park, who showed me!

It`s all so bleedingly obvious, when it`s been pointed out by THE expert.

Funny, I never even thought that perhaps the stones were *supposed* to be lying down. . It just seemed to me that they should be standing up.
It's quite horrible to imagine people breaking them down. What on Earth were they scared of?

Now I wish even more that they would be repaired and re-erected. I wonder what would be needed? And how much it would cost?
What a truly magnificent site it would be – a little Avebury at the top of the world! (Well, that’s how it feels when you’re up there).
