>If the records are that important, rent a truck, take them home and be done with it.<

Pha! Poppycock! That sort mentality ended up with Aurel Stein hauling away thousands of paintings and manuscripts from Tun-huang - the only difference was that he used camels not trucks. Mind you, as with the Elgin Marbles, Stein was probably responsible for indirectly saving them :-)

Now there's and interesting concept, Theft Conservation, which makes the removal of any artefact from anywhere a legitimate act if it's considered by anyone at all to be in the best interest of the artefact.

Rubbish! (and I want a curmudgeon's gong as well ;-)

and I want a curmudgeon's gong as well ;-)

yes, but curmudgeon's have to be partly right!

I have great sympathy with the idea of pinching them for their own good - on a fantasy basis at least. If you're going to make such a huge public attack on your employers you might as well get a truck, and move them, as Bucky says. It would be good to drive it to London, park it on the British Museum forecourt and request them to store the contents in one of their secure, climate-controlled vaults until a permanent arrangement has been found.

Having said all that, I have my doubts about whether this whole account isn't a major exaggeration.
