This is the first one I ever encountered:

It's around 4m tall and tapers alarmingly near the base. It looks as if it's been used for scratching at some point, but does not look as if it's ever been straightened. If something like this can resist a cow scratching against it then it must be deeeeeeep!

Now why would you want to do that, unless you wanted to show off?
I bet it starts to widen again immediately under the surface.

I think there's evidence in the landscape that people had a penchant for visual tricks and optical illusions.
