Isn't it freaky? I think if I'd been there when they were putting it up I'd have been muttering about picking something a bit sturdier and that it probably wouldn't stay up very long. Wrong as usual.

They took big risks with these stones. On Orkney there's at least one examples of a half finished standing stone that broke before it made it onto the site. How much face did someone loose when that happened? It couldn't have boded well for a chieftain or community if their efforts ended in nothing.

It's an engineering freak!
Is it known whether it's ever had to be straightened or re-erected?
If it's as it was, it's in line for some sort of record. There are bigger and taller obelisks, but are there any with such an extreme ratio between height and width? It would only need to shift an inch or two to become unstable.
All those years of winter storms...
