Crass? Yes I agree. Useless prohibitive signs are crass as well as ineffective. Could try iron cages for the boulders like at Kit Cody and the Whispering Knights, or perhaps some tasteful razor wire. Ever heard of wear and tear - nothing is forever is it? But I guess that's a crass observation too.

Could I interject here... you say "less signs at our wild places", which I, on the whole, agree with. In this case though it would be hard to define the monument as a wild place - it lies just of the road side, 2 minutes outside Chapel Stile village and already has a dry stone wall bisecting it. A sign attached to the wall (just by the steps perhaps?) would really not alter the mood of the setting.

Neglect and willful damage are as bad as each other. They are both hanging offences in my book :-)

Neglecting to protect a site against willful damage is compound.

You're right, nothing is forever, but when something has lasted for a few thousand years we should do everything in our power to stop it disappearing within just 20!

Tell, you what: I'll go and dynamite it next week and there'll be nothing to argue about. That act is the same as allowing it to be unnaturally eroded only quicker and with less long term moaning.

>Crass? Yes I agree.

Good. :o)

>Useless prohibitive signs are crass as well as ineffective.

I agree.

>Could try iron cages for the boulders like at Kit Cody and the Whispering Knights, or perhaps some tasteful razor wire.

I don't agree with that suggestion by you.

>Ever heard of wear and tear - nothing is forever is it?

Yes. All of our exposed rock art will dissappear in time. :o(
Unlike you, I don't believe that sportspeople should be allowed to accelerate the process by clambering over our Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

>But I guess that's a crass observation too.

You said it - not me.
