Culvie cairns

close

Drewbhoy, I regret to say I have found 0 about your cairn. The only mention I could see was on the canmap and I'm sure you looked there already? It suggests they're clearance cairns.

I was looking for stuff on the Gowk stone too - does that not mean 'cuckoo stone'? Or maybe not. Maybe cuckoos sit on it eh.

Yes, gowk is cuckoo (or by extension a person with big staring eyes)

I've been enjoying your fieldnotes Drewbhoy.
Hopefully one day I'll put them to good use.

cheers

Thank you for trying. I've climbed that hill a couple of times looking for any evidence and didn't see much of anything. If climbing the other side Thorax Stone Circle can be found. Is it it okay to ask you some questions on stone circles, cairns etc. cos there a few (maybe more than a few!!) I would like to find out about. You mentioned Kemps Stone/Cairn near the Conjure Cairn, what a strange but peaceful place that is, is it still there? If so I will go, find and take a photo!

Went to Binghill today, lovely place. There is cairn near there that doesn't get any/or much mentions, less than 50 meters away. Any clues?

Please keep Doin what you do!

Gowk in the Doric means to look or stare at for some period of time almost being intrusive. As for cuckoos I'm sure that's a more English thing as opposed to Scots/Doric. I asked the lady who lives in the house in the picture and she said that it refers to the stone keeping an eye on Bennachie.
