Gowk in the Doric means to look or stare at for some period of time almost being intrusive. As for cuckoos I'm sure that's a more English thing as opposed to Scots/Doric. I asked the lady who lives in the house in the picture and she said that it refers to the stone keeping an eye on Bennachie.

Gowk is Scots for cuckoo or a fool but particularly the former , Gawk is a fool and also to stare ins some areas pronounced Gack .

The stone's keeping an eye on Bennachie. Cool. Keep pestering those local people for information! you get some real gems.
