Well that could be the birthday present sorted too!
As the 400D built-in flash is pretty crap you could always buy a decent one like the Canon EX580 and you will find a remote trigger system for it quite handy too, then there's various filters and optical effects you can get. A good quality tripod and/or monopod is a must, not to mention a bigger camera bag with loads of pockets and straps, Battery Power Grip, additional Flash Memory, have I mentioned a wide angle lens.......

Especially if you have a wide angle lens, because it will cast a shadow over the bottom of you image if you're doing close-up shots.

I have 3 Sigma 500 DG Super flashes. One sits on the camera and acts as a master to the other two. This setup was cheaper than one Canon 580 and a remote trigger! However, the 500 DG isn't particularly brilliant. The new 530 DG Super is much better and nearly as good as the Canon.

The remote trigger also acts as a focusing aid in dark conditions, which is very useful with the cheaper Canon lenses.

So true. Still clearing my debt after buying the 5d. Plus 'L' lenses, new bag to hold it all, extra memory, decent tripod, new filters, rocket blower, off-shoe flash chord.... etc etc etc. Now I want a second flash gun, an expensive macro lens, macro flash ring, 2nd zoom... ooh, and those tilt and shift lenses look like fun.... :(

Don't think, just sell whatever you own that might raise money (don't rule out bodily organs) and get yourself a Nikon D300 and perhaps the amazing 18-200VR lens.

I used to wake up screaming and sweating from nightmares that involved me realising too late that I had the D200 on jpeg over a weekend, the quality of photos from the D300 straight from the camera are such that this would only mean less work. Nikon have finally caught up with Fuji's jpg engine.

The tones, colours and sharpness of this camera are incredible given that it's not full 35mm frame. It's basically an upgrade to the previous flagship D2x in a smaller body, better autofocus, better high ISO's, bigger and more accurate screen, live view with autofocus (I can cancel my contortionist classes when I want to photograph inaccessible megalithic art) and less than half the price the D2X launched at. Bargain of the century :)

Do it. Do it now!!
