I have only ever seen these old structures referred to as "walkers sherlters" on TMA. I have seen these strange enclosures from Skye to Wales. I have never, ever seen a walker shelter in one. Not have I ever sheltered in one. They don't offer any shelter at all. Howburn Digger Posted by Howburn Digger

They are indeed all over the place, I have seen lots of people sheltering in them and I have sheltered in many myself, from wind, rain and snow blizzards, they offer much more shelter than none at all.
Of course I have no proof that this was rebuilt by modern people sheltering from the elements, other than the wall being much higher than all the other hut circles.
I can imagine someone and his mate doing a bit of wild camping on a hill with things on it, but not really realising it's bad to remodel ancient structures.
If they're not walker shelters what else could they be?

Grouse butts in North Yorkshire, they will stretch across the moors, about half a dozen of them for the wretched shooters to kill the birds... moss Posted by moss

Wretched is far too generous.
The Yorkshire moors are well known for being the abode of the anti grouse league, they will have their very own circle of hell, shaped like a grouse butt I've no doubt, doesn't explain the hundreds I've seen on top of hills and mountains, and built into fort walls.

Are we sure this isn't just a well preserved or partially rebuilt original feature? That's what I'd say if I was the estate agent anyway. thesweetcheat Posted by thesweetcheat

They're all well preserved, but the walls of this one might be ten times higher than the rest, suggesting to me at least, partially rebuilt original feature. postman Posted by postman
