The other side of the large bough that landed on the rock. One cup mark visible to left by edge of bough.
The point on the rampart of believed promontory fort where the cup marked boulder formerly rested before being pushed over the edge by vandalism. It now lies on a flat area twenty feet below.
E end.. the OS says dyke starts further W, but is wrong. Ewden cairnfield at either side.
Late Bronze Age(?) hut circle revealed by heather burning, Side Head Slack immediately adjacent out of shot. SK 2278 9580 (approx)
Just a little taste of what I found at this large seemingly unrecorded site exposed by heather burning....s o much more......
A fine kerbed cairn, this....not visible, but the stones encircle. Inward, mind the drop should you feel like venturing to the bilberry covered centre – a potential leg breaker. Approx grid ref SK 233963. Ewden Lodge Fm in distance, R, Ewden Height to its left beyond.
From a mile away...in the landscape, on the horizon, left of the lighthouse. Doubtless similarily prominent from seaward: ‘we are/were here’.
The view south from the beach below the fort to Killantringan Bay and its dun.
The start of the level terrace at the fort’s entrance that follows the southern contour round to the seaward side.
The original way up to the entrance to the fort on the inland side.
The track back from the fort to where is currently the furthest point where ‘normal’ vehicles may be driven and turned round, by the derelict croft. The Supermoon rises.
The view south along the coast from Fort Point, fort bottom right. Kemp’s Wark promontory fort at Broadsea Bay is below and to the left of the high point on the horizon, and, beyond, Killantringan Bay’s dun is on a promontory below and to the right. Three fine beaches even if no sites.
