The Stonehenge World Heritage Site is big – so big, it is actually split in two, with much of it around Avebury.

People have lived and worked in the area long before they were ever declared a World Heritage Site – so when someone needs to build something, how do you make sure it will not negatively affect the much loved sites?

Plans to protect Stonehenge from future developments are under way.

The proposal is to introduce a planning document for Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site which will have to be taken into account when authorities are considering upgrades to roads or other visitor pressures at the “internationally significant” site, Wiltshire Council’s report states.

Next generation of archaeologists to train on dig

Archaeologists are to begin a five-year project to excavate the site of a nationally important Iron Age hillfort and analyse their finds.

The first dig will take place on the protected ancient monument at Wandlebury Country Park, external, just south of Cambridge, from 28 April to 9 May.

Abandoned £4m visitor centre on sale for £150,000

An abandoned visitor centre in Aberdeenshire, which cost £4m to build in 1997, is on the market for offers over £150,000.

Archaeolink Prehistory Park at Oyne, near Insch, shut down in 2011, after Aberdeenshire Council withdrew funding due to poor visitor numbers.
