Thanks all. It was lovely there under the trees. The buck and I watched each other for about 5 minutes. The doe was down at the bottom of the bank, I'd obviously disturbed them crossing it. I do like a wooded hillfort, apart from in summer when it gets a bit too overgrown and the canopy blocks the sunlight. This one is mostly open, only the two banks are in woodland. There's a big gap of a field or two between The Bulwarks (the outer line) and this bank, which is one of the biggest banks I know of. The fort is really a massive promontory fort rather than a proper hillfort.

I happen to think hill forts are better cloaked with trees.... as long as there are a few breaks for the view. Guess that's the treehugger in me.
