Recording the destruction of the landscape and monuments by the M3 below the Hill of Tara is not a particularly 'stones; pastime. To date, two souterrains have been discovered, one since destroyed. The Lismullin 'henge' partly destroyed and covered over.
The last to be mentioned is Rath Lugh, sitting on an esker, (a fragile gravel surface) it is in the process of also being partly destroyed by the contractors working on the proposed motorway. It does however have a temporary protection order on it issued by no other than Mr.Gormley himself. The protestors are intervening 'legally', they do after all have the backing of the order. The following is an independent archaeological report should anyone in Ireland be interested in it ;)

This is an update of what is happening, the following long video shows the events of the last two days. The contractors moved in, though with a lot of opposition from the protestors, the legal line has still not been drawn, but the protestors had one last 'trump' card up their sleeve, and they played it. A tunnel had been constructed into the esker, and someone, a very brave girl, has taken up residence, she is prepared to sit it out for as long as possible (in a tunnel that is already twisting because of the heavy machinery).
Apathy and complacency in these young people are not part of their makeup and I am humbled by their courageous defence of what they believe in...

And a statement ;) you've got to hand it to them.....

Statement on behalf of the Rath Lugh Direct Action Camp
21st century souterrain

The Protectors at Rath Lugh have planned a Direct Action method used
for
the first time on protest sites in Ireland. They have dug a tunnel
under
the route of the M3 directly in front of the Rath Lugh promontory fort
in the Gabhra Valley, Co Meath in Ireland.

The Protectors intend to occupy this tunnel and seal themselves inside
indefinitely to prevent construction traffic from passing overhead.
They
are laying their very lives on the line to protect and preserve Tara’s
landscape from the destruction wrought by their own Government.

The Protectors said: “We want to draw attention to the continued
erosion
of the esker by passing construction traffic, hence damaging the base
and foundation of the Rath.”

This is a continuation of their non-violent direct action. The tunnel
acts like a souterrain giving the occupant protection and making it
very
difficult for the enemy to enter.
