For me, they're most consistent record. Lucky enough to catch them in Brum the other night. Feckin' awesome gig. They always kinda remind me of The Earlies in some ways.

That's about it. Have a great week!

REM - Murmur. Didn't have the patience to finish it. Supposed to be their best

Jah Wobble - Deep Space, Without Judgement

Billy Mackenzie & The Associates in concert. Most impressive. Wonder what he would have been be like with a more jazzy backing? I think his voice would have worked well with that

Aphex Twin - Syro. One of Richard D's better albums I thought

Lotus Eaters - No sense of Sin. Pretty poor I thought. Hoping it would be comparable with First Picture of You

Presence - Inside. Quite forgettable. I can't even remember quite how bad it was

Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies. The best was to come later! Like Pure Phase and Ladies and Gentleman which I also listened to this week

Wild Swans - Space Flower. Didn't do anything for me

Slapp Happy - acnalbasac noom. Sounded better than it ever has done before

Been listening lots to the three Kikagaku Moyo releases: s/t, Forest of Lost Children & Mammatus Clouds. Really enjoyable - they can do pastoral, psych, kosmiche (Mammatus Clouds), they understand space in music, great dynamics, catchy tunes too... and they're on tour in the UK in mid-October.

Goat - Commune. V good...fantastic set at the Roundhouse too
The Heads - Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere. Wasn't so impressed on first listen, but it didn't have my full attention and it's a mammoth album so will reserve judgement...

Holy Sons - The Fact Facer. Another fine solo effort from Emil Amos.

Anthroproph - Outside the Circle. V inventive record...

Machinefabriek - Stillness Soundtracks... music from a film on Greenland and Antarctic icesheets (art film rather than a scientific documentary). Released on the excellent Glacial Movements label - a label dedicated to electronic music inspired by glaciers and ice etc!

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

The Association - Birthday

Micah P.Hinson - Micah P.Hinson & The Gospel Of Progress

V/A - The Active Listener Sampler #24 - The honour of making it onto this esteemed sampler was slightly tempered by the fact that my track is 'mastered' so much quieter than the more professionally recorded tunes it sits among, although this didn't stop it getting (rather surreally) compared to Chic in the review by The Sunday Experience: 'Those loving their ear ware graced in cosmedelic pulsars and somewhat treated in the spirit of electronica’s silver age might be mindful to seek out the Ilk’s dreamy dansette demurring ‘powerplant’ which in truth arrives in the promise of 70’s French space cadets Space fancying themselves going toe to toe with the Silver Apples only to along their lunar trajectory pick up hitchhikers Chic.' Weird!

Goblin - Roller

The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Part One
The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Vol. 2

LP’s
Bloodflowers – The Cure
A seriously good Cure album.

Black Sunday – Cypress Hill
This still sounds pretty fresh. OK, it’s a bit samey and goes off a bit as it goes on with most (though not all) of the best tracks coming in the first half, but I enjoyed hearing it again.

Face The Music – ELO
It’s worrying me how much I’m enjoying hearing this one again!

III – Led Zeppelin
The recent expanded edition.

Animositisomina - Ministry
It's a patchy album, with some of the opening tracks being too close to bog-standard metal for my taste, even if there is still a helping of Killing Joke here and there. But then towards the end of the album we get the rather ace Impossible with its thumping beat and almost Nepalm Death-like vocals.

American Interior – Gruff Rhys
I was a bit disappointed with this at first, thinking it went a bit downhill after the opening title track, though this was probably a lot to do with just how much I've ended up liking Hotel Shampoo which I reckon is a bit of a mini pop masterpiece. Anyway, I’m pleased to announce that this is turning out to be a bit of a grower, too.

To Be Kind – Swans
This is seriously good, especially disc one. In fact I couldn’t believe on first play just how great A Little God In My Hands. A second listen confirmed its greatness!

45’s
Centurion Travel EP - The Bomber Jackets
Down To Earth – Curiosity Killed The Cat
Cedar Room EP – Doves
Caught Out There – Kelys
Baby Jump – Mungo Jerry
Touched By The Hand Of God – New Order
Seven - Prince
High Rise Low Life – Shack
It Don’t Come Easy – Ringo Starr
Ride A White Swan – T.Rex

Main listens this week have been from 1980:

John Foxx - Metamatic. Some very classy Ballardian electro-pop on this. Always a good one to go back to.

Public Image Limited - Paris au Printemps. Bought this finally last year, but taken me ages to get to it properly. Despite Lydon's exhortions not to buy it because it's rubbish, it really isn't. Closer Poptones is particularly good. Wobble would not appear on another PiL album, sadly.

Killing Joke - Killing Joke. Another one that I revisit heavily from time to time. Tension and tearing, scary riffs accompany Jaz Coleman's urban distopia. As good as anything they ever did.

John Hassell and Brian Eno - Fourth World. Not listened to this much before so thought I'd give it a proper go this week. Pleasant enough, but lacks the striking textures of Eno's contemporary instrumental work.

Otherwise:

Elvis Presley - Sun sessions

The Fall - "Bingo Master's Breakout" 7"
Killing Joke - "Turn To Red" EP

Cabaret Voltaire - #7885 Electropunk to Technopop
V/A - From Brussels With Love
The Durutti Column - LC
Sterling Void - "It's Alright"

The Adventure Babies - "Camper Van" CD single. Still shit.
Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman
AFX - Analogue Bubblebath 4

Actress - Splaszh
Nils Frahm and Anna Muller - 7fingers
Dexys Midnight Runners - One Day I'm Going To Soar. Charity shop purchase, not too keen on first listen. G/F's verdict: "awful"
PiL - This Is PiL
CTMF - "All Our Forts Are With You" 7"
Alvvays - Alvvays
Interpol - El Pintor
Tricky - Adrian Thaws
Aphex Twin - Syro

Trigger Hippy (yes, really) - s/t
I know there are a few other Black Crowes fans on Unsung. This is an album that might be of interest to them and anyone else with a Bonnie Raitt / Delaney and Bonnie / Vinegar Joe shaped itch to scratch. The Crowes connection is that this is Steve Gorman and Jackie Greene's new band with Joan Osborne out front.

There is a very good (getting on for 2 hour) interview with Gorman podcasted here. Lots of good stuff about what it was like being in a major label band (and a band full of people with drink and drug and ego problems) in the 90s ...
