I have just heard of a proposal to remove the public right of way to Kiltiernan Portal Tomb. I am trying to gather as much info as possible and may be calling for pens to be put to paper.

Thanks in advance

That's not nice to hear.
Is it getting wrecked or anything that would cause it to need to be kept private?

I'm sure you can count on folk to assist, especially if it's just someone being snidey 'cos they don't want the public on their land.

Keep us informed FW.

You can count on us, 4W. My pen is poised....

We didn't go to Kiltiernan, did we?

Quill sharpened and parchment powdered in case they're needed!

I now know where the correct right of way is. Oh dear. It is not the route I and most other people have taken! Bugger!

However, I will be going via that route when I visit on Sunday :-) I will be clearing the path (I have been advised that a machete may be useful) and posting full directions and images of the path after my visit.

OK. Things may not be too bad. In fact things may well work out for the best. I was talking to the solicitor today who said that they are now looking at four routes that have been taken regularly over the years. One of these will definitely be kept open as a right of way. The one that is currently recorded as being a right of way isn't necessarily the best route anyway.

He will let me know how things turn out on the 10th. Hopefully the route I go and send people on will be the chosen way, but there is one other that is ok.

I tried the contested route out today, but it is impassable at the moment. So I went the 'normal' way and saw something for the very first time. Quite excellent! Roughly SW there is a V formed by to overlapping hills. In that V the peak of the Litle Sugar Loaf Mountain just about appears. Lovely! Move the tomb 20 yards east and it disappears. Move the tomb up the bank to the west and the peak is too obvious. I like sites that have peaks peeking at you coyly from behind other hills.

It's a bit of good and bad news really. The bad news is that there was not enough evidence to uphold the old right of way. This had become overgrown and was illegally blocked, so no one used it.

The good news is that the state of the original route meant that over the years lots of people have taken alternative routes. Consequently, when the council update their new maps in the Spring there will be three, maybe four, rights of way to Kiltiernan portal tomb marked on it. Hurrah!!!!
