Looks like im going to be moving to Cork for work so TMA has a new southern ireland correspondant. Should be interesting, looks like cork and kerry have a lot going on. Need to get a few OS maps but there certainly are a lot of stone circles hopefully they havent all been discovered on here yet!

Lucky you! Cork is a great city in itself but the sites... oh the sites! I've been down a few times now and there's still a huge amount of places I'm dying to see. I've been taking my time only visiting a handful of sites each time to get the most out of them and leaving plenty to be 'discovered' next trip. A lot of circles and stone rows are concentrated in fairly small areas so you could fit an awful lot into a couple of days but there are quite a few places better left for long, fine summer days.

OS Maps are an absolute must, using gps and 'as the crow flies' navigating usually made more difficulties than it solved for me! Only problem with maps is the sheer amount of sites can lead to confusion as to which one you actually want to go to.

Landowners also seem freindlier and more welcoming than in other parts but some are over enthusiastic and play down the worst terrain/fences/raging bulls.

I'm down there a fair bit for work too, if I am working on a Monday or Friday I usually stay over the day before/after so could possibly meet up for a rock hunt at some stage if you fancy it.

Cork isn't too bad for sites at all :-)

I once did 32 varied sites in a day. On another occasion I did 29 stone circles in one day!

In some parts you just have to go into the next field to get to the next one. You'll like it down there I reckon ...

Have fun down there. I had a week in Cork a couple of years back, and did a weblog. The first part covered our trip acoss to the ferry, the Irish stuff starts here and may be of use:

take heed discovery series map no9 has Bohonagh s.c as standing stones

Good luck down in rebel territory!

While I'm at it, any of the you lot on here know what a cillín is? I noticed one on the OS map below Saggart Hill and just noticed a couple more on Sheet 78.
