...even the soldiers weren't Roman. The ones stationed hereabouts (the Antonine Wall) were from the sixth and twentieth legion, mostly recruited from Spain/Portugal and Scythia.

On a day like today, as look out towards the snow covered Campsie Fells, my heart goes out to those poor squaddies, stationed on the edge of their known world, with only a turf rampart and a wooden barricade between them and the painted kamikaze warriors from the glens. This was bandit country ..... they did not like being here .... it was the Roman equivalent of being sent to the Eastern Front ...

... if anyone ever visits this area, let me know and I'll show you the sites. We've even got a bath house down the road. Although, today you would need to break the ice first before plunging!!
