I never said that, but not many genuine Romans lived in England except for the soldiers. The soldiers didn't live in the villas. It was Roman policy in most places to assimulate the local leaders into their system. Local chiefs who sided with the Romans became very powerful and rich. These owned most of the villas. The Roman empire was based on this idea. They did send govenors out to the provinces, but local law was imposed by native chiefs where possible. Basically, the Roman empire was one big protection racket - you rule our with our laws, pay us taxes and give us food and we won't come back and kick your butt. The Roman army and authorities built nice palaces for them as a reward for capitulating.

Oh, I know it's not really the correct forum but......

...even the soldiers weren't Roman. The ones stationed hereabouts (the Antonine Wall) were from the sixth and twentieth legion, mostly recruited from Spain/Portugal and Scythia.

On a day like today, as look out towards the snow covered Campsie Fells, my heart goes out to those poor squaddies, stationed on the edge of their known world, with only a turf rampart and a wooden barricade between them and the painted kamikaze warriors from the glens. This was bandit country ..... they did not like being here .... it was the Roman equivalent of being sent to the Eastern Front ...

... if anyone ever visits this area, let me know and I'll show you the sites. We've even got a bath house down the road. Although, today you would need to break the ice first before plunging!!
