Rhiannon whilst looking for the barrows on Charmy Down, obliterated by an aerodrome in ww2 came across a website (geocities.com/tmwfl/Charmy) that said Grimes had found a circle up there. Don't believe it, the website has fantastical theories about Stonehenge,Silbury etc. but there might be a kernel of truth in there; could be the remains of a kerbed barrow or something....

Funny that, on my way up to Kelston Round Hill on saturday I bumped into a mate who told me there used to be a big circle up that way. I took it with a pinch of salt and thought maybe he was confused & meant the stuff round the back of the uni...

I've not been up there, C. - sounds interesting. Looks rather like another Lansdown? What did you see?

I've seen it mentioned on a map at the front of Cunliffe's book on the baths, but he doesn't discuss it I don't think.

That's a pretty eccentric webpage! incidentally. but these people surely must develop their ideas from a germ of truth. I suppose the airfield flattening everything won't help to see what's there.
I've spotted this reference on the web (as you no doubt have)
William, A., FSA, 1950, 'Bronze Age Barrows on Charmy Down and Lansdown, Somerset', Arch. J.,XXX , 34-43
but actually getting hold of it might not be so simple.

Incidentally - what about the library in town now it's been revamped? They've taken away half the archaeology section as far as I could tell, and my favourite Grinsell book has totally dropped off the catalogue and disappeared.. gripe gripe. Dumbing down or what.
