Stonehenge and its Environs 134

I like this bit -

"This ghastly presence at Stonehenge has got to be the all-time tackiest facet of the Stonehenge experience. Why, even now, is it being allowed? Let's ditch it. It's a national disgrace."

When the phrase "national disgrace" was first used in parliament all those years ago it was surely the fast food joint that was prominent in everyone's minds. Yet it's still there!

It has been calculated that most visitors stay for quite a short time so it can hardly be said to be for their benefit. So for whose benefit has it been allowed to stay, disgracing us nationally? It's a puzzle.

I grew up in Amesbury and Durrington - have to say I'm equal parts embarrased and depressed by the continuing farrago of half baked ideas, u-turns etc. I've never understood why none of the LOCAL politicians (Amesbury Town Council, Salisbury District Council) have never had the imagination to see what a boon to the local economy Stonehenge could be if it's future was handled in a respectful, sustainable way.
I don't go home much these days. =;0(
