Chalked in?

Have to say that, from the pic, it doesn't looked chalked to me (oh, an EXPERT now, are we?)

But... It looks like it's not a first: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/22540

I know it's a different location, but it's not an isolated problem...

"Dear English Heritage/Historic Scotland
Please could you put signs, or add to your literature, something to tell people not to do this?
It'll be dead cheap and really easy.
Thank you"

As indicated on another thread - Scandinavians don't use chalk - they use official orange paint! It does show the designs very clearly though.

I don't think the Ri Cruin CnR is really there Goff, I couldn't see it. But I'd be tickled pink if you could get yersell oot there at night with a lamp in the autumn and prove me wrong.

But you're making a valid point, if Litttle Meg has been chalked, it's not first. There was a thread a small while back where discussion on the issue was prompted by a tma contributor chalking on marked stones up Ilkley way.

Personally I don't hold with chaliking the motifs these days, mostly out of consideration for other visitors interpretation of what's there/not there, but also out of a suspicion that it might not be good for the carvings, but my chemistry isn't good enough to allow me to feel able to offer a firm reason.
