Chalked in?

close

Visited Little Meg on sunday the 7th august 2005. Looking at the ring carvings they seem to have been what i would call chalked in some way, they seemed to stand out more, looking into the grooves of the rings i could see traces of something that may well have been used to highlight the rings. Has anyone else visited the site and noticed this?

This is one of the pics i took that show what i mean.

I was there on sunday too - late afternoon/early evening. I thought the lighting was particularly good for seeing the spiral clearly that day.
Ive been there loads over the years and I honestly dont think there has been anything added to make the carvings clearer. I reckon its all down to light conditions.

Have to say that, from the pic, it doesn't looked chalked to me (oh, an EXPERT now, are we?)

But... It looks like it's not a first: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/22540

I know it's a different location, but it's not an isolated problem...

"Dear English Heritage/Historic Scotland
Please could you put signs, or add to your literature, something to tell people not to do this?
It'll be dead cheap and really easy.
Thank you"
