on excess baggage on radio four on saturday, they had a dude who was talking about possible prehistoric sites on st kilda. apparently Sir somebody or other dug up (got rid of) some 'fairy mounds' in the thirties.

anyone know any more?

st kilda really is 'out there' but as Lewis (and Callanish) are the nearest places and its been fairly untouched, you would expect something - although as the guy said - it's probably underneat the one settlement if it's there at all.

Dunno if it's any help to you but there's a nice article written by Andrew Fleming on St Kilda in the April 2005 edition of the Prehistoric Societies newsletter PAST. It's available on their website http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prehistoric/

Could it have been a Rev somebody in the 1830s?

"Archaeological observations on St Kilda began as early as the 1830s. During his agricultural and housing improvements, Rev. Neil MacKenzie noted the presence of:

'very numerous .... green mounds called 'gnocan sithichean', which were looked upon as abodes of fairies. These were all removed in the course of agricultural improvements. They were composed of stones mixed with a little earth to a depth of two or three feet. At some distance below this layer were stone coffins formed in two different ways.... In a few of them bones were found, and in nearly all of them pieces of earthen vessels.' "

a cquick look on Canmore reveals quite a few cairns, a couple of souterrains and some stone settings that may or may not be old

I saw St Kilda last year when we visited Harris last year. I'd love to go out there because I own a small flock of Soay sheep which (as a breed) originate from Hirta.

Unfortunately I've just now moved into town, so I'm in the process of finding new homes for the sheep. I'll miss 'em.

watched most of this last night, about midway through one of the presenters enters either a chambered tomb (very like an Irish court tomb without the court), or a souterrain.

St. Kilda, wow - would love to spend a month there.
