After dipping in and out of the modern antiquarian book for some time, I am being ultra efficient and starting to plan for my first trip to the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge. Any tips on what time to arrive, where to park etc etc?

Has anyone got any inside knowledge into English Heritage's plans to open the site?

Thanks

Burgey

You might want to consider that John North (google John North Stonehenge) thinks the sunset was viewed THROUGH Stonehenge, perhaps from somewhere along the Avenue. And that processing slowly up the Avenue toward the circle would keep the sun in view through some "windows" between the stones for many minutes. Meaning you don't have to go in the circle at all.

Food for thought!

The free access to Stonehenge for the winter solstice is not advertised and no plans are published. Usually, within an hour of sunrise the gates are opened; we are herded out about an hour after sunrise.
Parking is on the track which crosses the A344 immediately west of the Stonehenge visitor area.
Arrive as early as you like, bearing in mind it'll be bitterly cold. Some vehicles will be there overnight, probably with a camp fire. As dawn approaches the track fills up making it more difficult to park.
