I have seceral new theories. one is that the movement and placement of stones was dependant on the winter snows. some people say it doesn't snow much there today but that shows true stupidity. we are talking about 3 to 5 thousand years ago, three major sea level changes and a few ice ages (mini ones). read more at

Not a new theory, it makes sense to move stones over hard ground after the harvest is in.

I hope it snows a little this weekend, nothing shows up the tiny height differences between ditch and bank better than light flurries of snow.

Hi Dupisha,
Quite a few people round here have been involved in stone shifting. I suspect many of them will think moving stones without snow is sufficiently straightforward but the part of your ideas that caught my eye was the snow ramp for pulling the stone up to drop into a hole. That's very neat. Ramps have been proposed before but the question has always been "where is it now?"

It's so funny to think of all those old schoolbook illustrations of prehistoric cavemen dragging these giant stones across bare ground with ropes.

I've said it before & I'll say it again- 'Primitive' people were far more intelligent and resourceful than we can imagine. We've devolved in many respects, not evolved. Think of how disassociated most of us have become from the real nitty-gritty of life- we no longer have to be aware of the seasons, subtleties of nature, animal behavior, etc. to survive... for most of us food and shelter are things we purchase with money made in pursuit of abstractions of the human mind.
