Hah! We had a long discussion on "restoring" Stonehenge on the Stone Pages about a year ago, and that was exactly my proposal. A glitzy visitor center a mile from the stones. (Actually I proposed a series of permanent, exact replicas of the various phases. Would that be cool, or what?) Then, no transportation to the stones for the able bodied: instead, an interpretive path pointing out the other features in the area. Golf carts for the halt only.

The few intrepid souls who did make it to the stones could easily be monitored, and all who wanted could go among them any time. Most would be well satisfied with the reconstructions, especially since there would be many of them, and only one half gone tumbledown original.
