we're in the camper - and very happy to park up out of the way. i wonder if we need to book ferries?

Ohhh, what camper have you got?? We were going to go up in ours (we WILL go next year!) and found a campsite which sounded OK if you don't mind official sites: "Point of Ness is on the shores of Scapa Flow, a mile west of Stromness pierhead, and has dramatic views over the sea to the hills of Hoy. Point of Ness Caravan & Camping Site (Tel. 01856 873535)"

Wild camping is allowed on Orkney as long as you are away from homesteads and lifestock. Have a blast!

We nearly ended up there on our visit cos we'd not booked accommodation beforehand - couldn't even find the campsite! Saw lots of seals though, and eventually ended up in an amazing accommodation overlooking Stones of Stenness, Ring o'Brogar, Maes Howe, etcetc... How lucky!

I'd be tempted to book ferries in advance - mainly cos I'd be worried I'd not get on! I'm occasionally sensible like that...
