It is a dreadful place of peat hags and mire. It is the scariest place I have ever been to, though some people like it. I don't know anything about its pre-history and it may have been drier once. There are weird natural rock formations, but everywhere it is wet, black and treacherous. I got lost there when the mist came down and it was really very frightening.

Sounds very spooky. Not somewhere to go without your wellies and an anorak either - not somewhere to mess with nature by the sound of it.

I suppose if stone circles are friendly trading places or astronomical reminders then you wouldn't want to go sticking one somewhere in the middle of a bleak frightening place.

Dartmoor has lots of prehistoric remains though? But I suppose it did used to be much warmer then, and perhaps further north that was not the case.

Chuckle, that sounds like somewhere straight out of Beowulf :-) I heard on the radio a few days ago (unfortunately missed the first bit) that a film of Beowulf is being made - might be wrong on that though.
