I was nearly going with the 'available materials' thing, but why are there some, but relatively few, in North Yorkshire?
There's tons of stone there. Or do you reckon it's the wrong kind of stone or summat?
Any thoughts?

Hi Moth,
Without looking into the population of North Yorks at the time, I'm guessing that there was relatively low population levels and that while there was an abundance of raw materials there weren't the people looking to use it.
Just a guess. I'll have a dig around.
