I think you are right - Just pondering the ritual reasons (or lack of them) to build stone monuments in some locations rather than others.

The west country has, by far, more stone workings than the east. I can only put this down to available materials.

Don't forget that Scotland is equally populated with large numbers of stone built sites as the west Country.

I was nearly going with the 'available materials' thing, but why are there some, but relatively few, in North Yorkshire?

There's tons of stone there. Or do you reckon it's the wrong kind of stone or summat?
