Exactly! The consultations and investigations are costing hundreds of thousands but nothing is being done to halt the ongoing damage. You can so easily talk things to death and never get agreement. The only people to benefit are the bureaucrats, consultants and investigators who become ever richer fat cats. Meanwhile drip by drip and slump by slide the chalk settles and the bulge bulges until - whoops!.

I think if we were talking about almost any other major monument you would have more than a point, the thing we can be thankful for here is that Silbury has withstood the most indecent intrusions and sustained assaults and is holding up reemarkably well. I think in particular of the awful collapse of winter 2000, and the gaping hole left open to the weather there after.
