"You seem to implying Nigel shouldn't be saying what he prefers as an option or that he shouldn't be entitled to express his opinion on the forum or indeed to EH. "

Where did I say, or imply, he shouldn't have an opinion? I said that the way he puts it, you would think his was the only opinion, or only one that was valid.

"Comments like "paranoia suits you" abound when you talk to Nigel and I'm just confused as to why you take such a confrontational attitude on this."

"So I guess I'm entitled to express an opinion, notwithstanding your attempts to discredit me."

Where and how did I attempt to discredit him? Just by asking who he was and what made his opinion the only valid one?

In another thread Nigel wrote "Yes it is, and it's wrong, and the archaeologists who look the other way in droves are active partners in it. Sod them all. Where's morality in public affairs? What sort of profession sees huge wrongdoing and keeps quiet about it?"

- who's sniping who? and first too! I'm just replying in a like manner....ok?

Sorry for barging in - I can reply to Nigel's rhetorical question "What kind of a profession etc" with the answer 'a bunch of nitwits'.

I hope this comment furthers the discussion. In Knarsdale (I know, I know, shut up about Knarsdale) there's a special hill. Many of the monuments are oriented upon its narrowest profile. The hill's a drumlin and the shooting estate has just carved a broad road over its flank. It's within a SSSI and it's even possible that E.N. grant-aided the road up to 50%. It looks just crap.

who's sniping who? and first too! I'm just replying in a like manner....ok?

Surely when an issue is being discussed the argument has to take two sides and hopefully a consensus will be arrived at? Attacking a particular person doesnt help the argument in question. Nigel feels strongly about the issue of Silbury Hill, Do you have an opinion one way or the other about the grouting or keeping the tunnel open? We still don't know, you sidetrack the subject elsewhere. Nigel is a good ranter, he brings the issue to the forefront, see his metal detecting work over the past few months, he's not paranoic about the subject just passionate and lets rip at a few archaeologists now and then..... HA draws the attention of people to what is happening to the monuments and landscapes around them, it takes an independent stand and an independent view from the standard bodies that are supposed to protect them; something you can hopefully do in a democracy without being shouted down......

p.s. Radio 4 prog. buddhist thinking , give victory, take defeat. No I could'nt do it either but there is always the middle ground......................................

I've no inclination to dissect this minutely, I'm a too the point person and unfortunately thats why I've approached this as I have. I see you making comments which aid no-one and in my eyes belittle a good, hard working and passionate person who cares deeply about the monuments in this country. You may see them differently and that is of course your prerogative.

My mum never told me 'say nothing if you've nothing positive or helpful to say', but if she had she'd have been making a lot of sense.
