Odd isn't it? My understanding is that it is a harvest festival from "hlafmaesse" that being Old English for "loaf mass". Middle English version is "Lammasse". Its also got something to do with St Peter's imprisonment and deliverance. Bugger all to do with climbing a crumbling hill in a nightshirt!

Which makes it a word for a Christian continuation of a very ancient harvest festival surely?

Why not use the word which is closer in origin to your native tongue, even if it is Xtian in origin?
