I tend to agree with Moth, the Cromlech looks right in terms of distance from the road and the fact it's on the left (no sign of a fork in the track though). Maybe the Devil's Den was a copse or field name (unlikely a barn would have such a name). BUT, how come Rhiannon's folklore about the Devil being connected with the actual stones, rather than a wood etc?
A bit exciting though isn't it. Worth a quick walk up there this afternoon by a conveniently placed local, don't you think?

Mmm, I'll shut up then.

Wot's the cromlech marked at the top, just beneath the N/S/E/W pointer? Have I missed something else all these years?

I'd go and investigate today myself, but I'm still invalid :-(

it is quite a dodgy map, hard to compare with the OS map if you have a look. There are so many sarsen stones in the general area... And there's more than one 'cromlech' on that map if you notice, to add to the general mystery.

If it's from the 1830s, and something was there then, then you'd think trusty old Stukeley would have had something to say about it previously?

You know who we need.... the oracle Mr G.
