This 1835 map appears to show a "cromlech" about a quarter of a mile north west of the Devil's Den, that didn't oughta be there.
Any comments?

Could it be that the cromlech is what we know as the Devil's Den and the place marked "Devil's Den" is 'just' a place called Devil's Den?

I know the track may have moved, but it's the 'wrong' side of the place marked "Devil's Den" but looks right in relation to the cromlech (from memory).

And presumably the cromlech could have then become named after the nearby "Devil's Den"....

PS Would the place marked as "Devil's Den" be about where there is now a barn?

Looking at the 1889 map on http://www.old-maps.co.uk it seems that the more NWesterly cromlech is in fact the Devil's Den.

There is a Devil's Den cottage marked, with a Well where the Devils Den is marked on the 1835 map...

Woohoo!
The skies were crowded today as it was 100 years to the day since the Wright boys took to the skies.
Nice one boys!
