Avebury

dead and buried?

The problem with restoration, as Newgrange demonstrates so well, is that you end up with one man's vision of how the site looked at one particular time. I think it was Josh Pollard who, when asked about restoring Avebury, said something like, "Fine, let's restore it to the mesolithic." Who decides what state/period to restore it to? Should Stonehenge be returned to its earliest state of just a circular eathern bank? Afterall the structure we see today could be said to have been vandalism of the original monument by a later group of 'religious nutters'.

Avebury's fairly well protected and ain't going anywhere. Let's concentrate on some of the stuff that's truly under threat.

Yep I agree.

Surely you can see the difference between sequential phases of construction at Stonehenge and the wanton destruction of stone burning, breaking and burying at Avebury. No - I would not want to see Stonehenge restored to its first phase anymore that I would want to see Silbury Hill dismantled to reveal its first stage. The argument for non restoration would seem to favour non intervention at Silbury so that we do not damage the historic tunnels. I repeat - I accept the financial argument but not the humbug.
