Avebury

dead and buried?

Surely you can see the difference between sequential phases of construction at Stonehenge and the wanton destruction of stone burning, breaking and burying at Avebury. No - I would not want to see Stonehenge restored to its first phase anymore that I would want to see Silbury Hill dismantled to reveal its first stage. The argument for non restoration would seem to favour non intervention at Silbury so that we do not damage the historic tunnels. I repeat - I accept the financial argument but not the humbug.

"Surely you can see the difference between sequential phases of construction at Stonehenge and the wanton destruction of stone burning, breaking and burying at Avebury."

If looked at by the original builders of Stonehenge the subsequent stages could have been viewed as wanton destruction of their monument.

If Avebury was ever rebuilt to any stage then it should be hailed as a new phase, not a restoration to an older one.
