I went to Stonehenge today and stopped at a newsagents cum general store on the Plain. There was the usual wall of glossy mags, and it was very noticeable that not only were none of the archaeo mags for sale (nothing unusual in that), but there were no history mags not even the family ones that are popular, and no heritage mags other than Wiltshire Life if that counts. There was not even rambling or wildlife mags.

There was however a choice of 4X4 mags, two with landrover in the title, one something like 4x4 choice, and the other I forget but it was offroading.

Even recognising a lot of military live in the nearby villages I wonder (orwell style) what this said about our culture ?

"I wonder (orwell style) what this said about our culture?"

You Southern softy. How many archaeology or history mags d'you think have EVER been on sale up here?

Now if it's Baseball caps that are your special interest, come on up it's paradise.

Its probably true that society was ever so, Pound's poem expresses the thought (Littlestones thread) " What thou lov'st well shall not be reft from thee",
I think it comes down to fighting the good fight in the end.........
The Stonehenge radio talk the other day could hardly be heard for the sound of cars and planes - this is the place SOLD as a number one tourist spot!

I think this would say 'I am in the country'.

It's two worlds !

Amesbury, Durrington and Ludgershall have 3 of the worst secondary schools in the county, "decent" jobs are few, there are no cultural facilties nearby except in Salisbury which costs about a fiver return.
Having said that though, a lot of locals like going out into the ritual landscape, a good few do understand what is going on out there, and perhaps don't feel the need for a specialist magazine.

Visiting Imber recently, I was astounded that the local pub no longer served Tizer.
It was with a heavy heart too that I noted the quantity of fumbled chocolate bars strewn about with such gay abandon inside the ruined houses; many of which were clearley marked 'KEEP OUT - DANGER' .... Why oh why don't they sell Tiger Tim and Toby Twirl there anymore? Clearly Prof. Bison was an Arch-Druid and the church at Imber being on a sacred hill (?) one can but wonder about the lack of Low-rider Monthly magazines on sale anywhere in Wiltshire!

Dazed and Confused! Gotta go ... a Lizard Creature is at the door .... or an Avon Lady perhaps. Ahhhhhhh ..... OK, I'LL GET TO THE POINT .... WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE BUY MAGAZINES AND EXPECT ANTIQUARIAN TOMES OF SUCH WORTH AS A C SMITH'S doo-dah about Wiltshire to cost £20 ....... check out Rude Stone Monuments of .... worth a punt! Or if you've only £20 to punt, try the myriad of brochures circa 1900 covering Stonehenge, The Rollright thingamy stones et al.
