For better or for worse, those "features" are all part of the mound's rich history now... We know better these days, of course, so that sort of thing would NEVER happen now, would it, boys and girls? ;)

And although it's quite grotesque, and I'd have been happier had it NOT been there, I can't help but like it for sheer curiosity value!
