It could be a cross, or a ankh, or even a kinda stick figure. I don't know how much of my perception of a carving is my brain trying to find signal from noise.

Needs a close up photo, or even better, a wax-rubbing.

If it is a carving, the obvious question would then be, how to tell it's age?

Looks like an "E" to me - but then a bittova cross - then a 4E joined-up - it's a bittova Rorscharch really. It does look like some of the boundary-mark carvings on a lot of other stones I've seen. Is this site on a boundary at all?
