Can anyone offer me one good reason i shouldn't fetch the other nearby (and highly portable) piece home for safe keeping till someone in "authority" decides it's future ?

It's obviously at risk where it is.

Though your concerns are justified you’d probably be letting yourself in for prosecution. Can you talk to the landowner, explain things to him/her, and take it from there (not literally of course).

Everyone knows the fate of those who meddle with the stones. It will bring bad luck to you until returned to its rightful place. Your crops will fail, your chickens will go mad, you will feel a nagging sense of unease, etc etc.

Obviously the above may not actually happen. But it might.
