The other rumour, that it was done by someone (identifiable) with a grudge over a planning refusal, was pretty awful IMO. If I was him and heard anyone say it in the pub I'd sue the pants off them.

The two rumours aren't unrelated. However, I won't go into detail, because I don't think it's fair to defame someone on the basis of hearsay.

Well everything is hearsay unless someone actually saw it being done. And even then they'd need proof to be safe from being sued. I've no axe to grind, the vandalism is outrageous, I'm just putting myself in the shoes of this bloke with a whole town muttering about him, I'd definitely pick a couple of people out, rich ones, and take them to the cleaners pour encourager les autres...
