I spoke to Geraldine Stout recently about the Timoney Stones, she investigated them a good few years ago. Her feelings are that they are not prehistoric, I suggested they might be a folly put there by some eccentric landlord and she reckoned that could well be the case. There doesn't seem to be any folk traditions or mythology either, which is odd.

Burl quotes her in From Carnac to Callinish but the quote is only vague and non-committal. If they are 'a folly' they're a damn weird one. Some of them have a thorough prehistoric feel about them, but I guess that doesn't mean anything. Burl also say "Archaeologists have remained cautious… and baffled." I'll try to finish the blog soon and further muddy the waters. :-)
