I can see exactly what you mean. But I think we're both imagining it?! I can see one round the dent in the lower left of the picture too. And on the other photo all sorts of shapes appear. People who like ghosts see those in photos. I used to see animals in our old carpet. There was a great crocodile in a cloud the other day. But rock art fans see cup and rings. Paradolia if you want a posh word for it.

Or maybe it's really there :)

Paredoilia is a result of imagining stuff that it isn't there .
In many cases of rock art the markings are very faint and it needs the right light to appreciate what is actaully present . A good example , have a look at pic 21 at http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/6641/craig_hill.html , then look at the same surface in better conditions in pic 20 . These markings are really there but you won't aways see them .

Looks like neither of us can spell it, seems it's pareidolia :) But as I understand it you do have to have something there to see (or hear) to start with, it's just you might then elaborate it / misinterpret it.

Anyway it's all right, I do believe rock art exists. Having a human tendency to see circles in things egged on by helpful lichens and shadows is probably a good way of spotting something faint but real. Better get out the torches and a thick bit of material, HSD...
